Bedside lamps without distracting glare

Useful height depends on the bed, your reading position and the area you want to illuminate.

A glowing bedside lamp beside a bed

A bedside lamp is usually positioned beside the bed but viewed from several places: lying down, reading upright and entering the room. Its height therefore cannot be judged in isolation. Compare the lamp with your mattress and bedside table, and consider reaching the switch before choosing a particular shape or decorative finish.

Check your own line of sight

Sit in bed as you normally do when reading. Consider where a lamp can reach the book without giving you a direct view of the light source. A shade changes that view but is not opaque from every angle on every design. A tiny lamp on a low table may look quite different from an elevated reading position than in a product photograph. Also check the view while lying down and from the opposite side of the bed.

Divide the limited space sensibly

Mark the base diameter on the bedside table. Is there enough room left for a glass, book and the items you actually put there? A broad shade can extend beyond the base footprint. Allow for its distance from the bed and for moving the table when cleaning. A clamp lamp or another design may save space, but requires an appropriate fixing position and must be selected according to the product’s specific instructions.

Reach the switch without searching

Establish whether the switch is on the base, cable or lamp head. A cable switch behind the table may be difficult to reach while lying down. Touch controls can be convenient but should respond clearly to the movement you actually make. Read how brightness levels are selected and whether settings are remembered. A remote control needs its own reliable resting place. Extra operating methods do not automatically simplify a lamp when you mainly want one obvious switching point.

Compare light distribution and care

If you read beside another person, notice where light falls beyond the book. A directional model offers different possibilities from a shade that glows all around. Dimming and bulb selection must suit the intended design; follow its stated approvals. Check whether bulbs are replaceable and how the shade may be cleaned. Woven or pleated surfaces show and collect dust differently from smooth shapes and should fit the care routine you are willing to maintain.

Before you buy

  • Consider your view when reading and lying down.
  • Compare both base and shade with the bedside table.
  • Reach the switch from the position you actually use.
  • Check light distribution, bulb approval and cleaning requirements.

A suitable bedside lamp is easy to reach and directs light usefully. The bed and table together determine a practical lamp height.
