Storage & organisation

Choose a storage basket that actually fits your shelf

Check the usable dimensions and contents before choosing baskets that look tidy but make everyday storage awkward.

Woven baskets on a white shelf

A basket can make open shelving look calmer and keep small items together. It can also waste space, drag across the shelf or hide what you need. The useful starting point is the relationship between the shelf opening, the basket’s shape and its contents, rather than the product photograph alone.

Measure the clear opening

Measure width, height and depth at the narrowest point. A fitting, frame or skirting detail may reduce the usable space. Leave room for your hand as well. A basket that only just fits may be difficult to remove unless its handle is accessible.

External dimensions do not describe storage capacity. Thick walls, a wide rim and tapered sides reduce the interior. If a particular folder or box needs to fit, compare it with the usable base dimensions rather than the opening at the top.

Gather the contents first

Put the intended contents on a table. Lightweight textiles need a different basket from heavy books. Small objects can fall through loose weaving, while delicate fabrics may catch on rough fibres. A smooth lining can help, although it also takes up space.

An open basket is often easier for items used every day. A lid can suit occasional storage, provided it opens fully inside the shelf. Otherwise you will need to take the whole basket out every time you want something.

Check the material and handles

Natural weaving adds texture but can be uneven. Look for protruding ends, crooked edges and a rough underside. A coarse base may mark delicate shelving. If you add protection underneath, make sure it does not leave the basket unstable.

Fabric baskets can often fold flat, but their ability to hold a shape depends on the construction. Plastic is easy to wipe down, though the design and care instructions still need to suit its use. Pay particular attention in damp rooms: avoid storing persistently damp textiles in poorly ventilated containers.

Try one before buying a matching series

Start with one basket when setting up a new storage system. Fill it normally and spend a week testing access, weight and putting it back. Buy more only when that works. Matching baskets can look organised, but they help only when you can find the contents without repeated searching.

Before you buy

  • Measure the shelf opening at its narrowest point.
  • Allow for interior dimensions and tapered sides.
  • Test the handle with the basket filled.
  • Inspect the underside for rough edges.
  • Try one basket in daily use before buying several.

The right basket moves comfortably when filled and makes good use of the shelf. Choose the pattern after the practical fit.
