Choose a kettle around your daily routine

Fill levels, lid access and cable placement help you choose a kettle that works on your counter.

An electric kettle with rising steam

A kettle is often used several times a day, so small differences in filling and handling become noticeable. First consider whether you mostly make one cup of tea, several drinks or water for cooking. Those routines provide more useful buying criteria than the largest possible collection of programmes on the control panel.

Make sure small quantities are possible

Compare the minimum fill level with total capacity. A large kettle may be inconvenient for single cups if it requires substantially more water than you need. The water indicator should be visible from your usual viewing direction, including while holding the handle. Check whether its markings are clear. A kettle without an external scale requires a different filling routine; its uncluttered exterior does not automatically make that routine easier.

Check filling under your tap

Measure clearance beneath the tap or consider whether you normally fill a kettle using another vessel. The lid should open sufficiently and operate without an awkward hand movement. A large opening also helps you inspect the interior and descale according to the instructions. Any fitted filter needs to remain accessible. Find out how it is removed and whether the manufacturer offers a replacement before making the purchase.

Assess handling in its actual position

Plan a place for the base beside a suitable socket and route the cable as directed in the manual. A long cable adds little value if spare loops occupy the worktop. Check whether the kettle can be placed on the base from different directions and whether the controls remain accessible. In a tight recess, also account for the space taken by the open lid and observe the specified clearances.

Match extra functions to real habits

Temperature selection helps when you regularly prepare drinks with particular brewing requirements. Someone who almost always boils water may gain little from it. Keeping water warm creates a different operating routine from pouring immediately and deserves a deliberate decision. When paying more, also compare cleaning, spare-part availability and understandable controls. A clearly readable scale may help every day more than several programmes you must locate in the manual.

Before you buy

  • Compare the minimum fill level with your normal requirement.
  • Check lid access and clearance beneath the tap.
  • Plan cable placement and space around the location.
  • Pay for extra programmes only when they match actual habits.

A suitable kettle makes frequently repeated actions easy. Its capacity and functions should fit your ordinary quantity and the place where it stands.
